About the Memphis Scottish Society

The Society's credo “to foster education and promote understanding of things Scottish". As such, the Memphis Scottish Society, Inc., a non-profit corporation founded in 1984, seeks to foster education and promote understanding and good fellowship among individuals of Scottish descent and people from other backgrounds who are drawn to the uniquely rich culture and heritage of Scotland.

Our membership/community outreach programs include:

  • informal and informative Monthly Meetings, held the second Monday of each month
  • Grace Notes, a monthly newsletter which includes articles about Scottish history, personalities, events and activities, plus music, and book reviews
  • focus groups for piping and drumming, history, traditional singing, and military service
  • annual seasonal celebrations: Burns Nicht Supper, Annual Ceilidh, Annual Picnic, Halloween (some years) and Christmas Party
  • annual scholarships and grants, awarded for Scottish studies
  • assistance to local area churches in staging the traditional Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans service
  • support of the Arkansas Scottish Festival, held annually the last weekend of April on the campus of Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas

Board Meetings:

The MSSI Board holds its monthly meetings on the last Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Board meetings are open to all members of the Scottish Society, who are welcome, invited, and encouraged to attend.
